Square Breath For Anxiety Relief
Today anxiety being one of the major factors affecting mental health. So I thought I'd share with you this powerful yet simple solution for some anxiety relief.
A major reason why we have anxiety has to do with an imbalance or un-regulated nervous system. Meaning that our nervous system is constantly leaning towards the sympathetic mode (fight or flight).
If sympathetic mode is constantly activated our brain/nervous system reads this as a sign of potential danger. Constantly releasing cortisol and adrenaline which in turn keep our anxiety high.
But don't worry because one of the most powerful health tools you have is your breath. I like to think of it as one of the missing pillars of health.
Knowing how to control your breath with the exercise I'll be teaching you today is one way to regulate your nervous system to help you gain some anxiety relief.
How you are breathing already gives a lot of insight of your current nervous system state...
For instance if you pay attention closely when ever you feel anxious your breathing is mostly likely shallow and rapid. And just by simply adjusting your breathing you can release a lot of tension in your body and mind.
This works by activating your vagus nerve which switches your nervous system to parasympathetic mode (rest & digest).
This simple yet powerful anxiety relief mediation I'm going to give you, you can do anytime you need some anxiety relief...
This is an ancient yogic breathing exercise that helps give the sense of feeling grounded and more at peace. It works with the number 4. The 4 represents a square which represents stability. Breathing in this manner also to give you a similar sense of stability and balance.
To perform:
Find a quiet place to comfortably sit.
• Inhale to the count of 4
• Hold inhale to the count of 4
• Exhale to the count of 4
• Hold exhale to the count of 4
• Repeat for 3-10 minutes.
If you really want to have long lasting anxiety relief, this breathing technique is something you should practice regularly. It take some time to properly regulate your nervous system to a balanced state.
Know that you can bring balance to your nervous system and get anxiety relief.
I hope this helps. From someone who suffered from anxiety and panic attacks in my late teens - early 20's I want you to know that you can conquer anxiety. Anxiety doesn't have to ruin your life. If I beat it, so can you!
